12 Dates of Christmas~ Date #9.

Last night, we had a night out with our cute neighbors and some of their friends. We had a ton of running around to do to get ready for this upcoming weekend, but we were so glad we took the time out to meet up with everyone. We had a great time, as always, and "all-you-can-eat" anything is fine by me! Although I am not eating the raw sushi these days {not prego, yet...} there was plenty for me to stuff my face with, and we laughed the night away. I cannot wait for Katie to pop that little baby girl out. 2 more months! And she got a BOB jogging stroller for Christmas...totally stealing borrowing!

Tonight, I had my first date with this baby. It went really, really well... I think I may be in love.

Being able to run while watching the Sex and the City movie turned up super loud? Please and thank you!

This weekend our dearest friends are coming to visit, and we have such a fun weekend planned for New Year's Eve. Tomorrow, Ann and Marcel are coming and we are surprising them with a food crawl and homemade treats dedicated to memories and foods of our recent Europe trip. It will be awesome.... details later! Happy New Year!!

The 12 Dates of Christmas- Date #8

Last night, we went to the Winterhaven Festival of Lights with our friends Katie and Josh and her family. It was colder than we thought, but we bundled up and braved the cold and the crowd. There were a ton of cool light displays at the houses, (it's a rule to live in the neighborhood that you have to decorate your house with a minimum amount of lights), trolley rides, horse drawn carriages, hot chocolate, and kettle corn. One house even has fountains like the Bellagio that dances to music, and another has a snow making machine. It's not Christmas here in Tucson without visiting Winterhaven. Afterward we went out for late night Irish coffees and some appetizers. Lovely Date Night.

excitement.

There are a number of things that are making me full of excitement these days!! Since that is exactly what this little blog is about, I thought I would share:

1. Four days until Christmas!! My sweet husband and I are heading up to Phoenix again this year to continue with our lovely traditions my family has had since I was small, and making new traditions with my husband's family. Being together is truly all that matters- and of course, my Mom's Christmas morning breakfast. She seriously makes every single breakfast item you could ever imagine. To die for....I dream of it all year long.

2. Visiting with friends all weekend long! Our schedule is already packed full~ we never rest when we are in Phoenix.

3. New party dresses for Christmas and New Year's Eve.

4. Spending New Year's Eve in Tucson with some amazing people. Rick and I are so touched that our friends would actually come to Tucson to us to celebrate such a big holiday. They never cease to amaze us. Ann, Marcel, Travis, Brielle, Paul, Bri- We love and appreciate you!

5. Only one more super long run (20 miles) before the big race on January 15th! And cheering on my sweet husband and his friends the day before at the Tough Mudder.

6. Having some sweet new running duds from a generous friend, Kyle. Lululemon here I come!

7. Celebrating my best friend Ann's 30th birthday in Vegas at the end of January!! Her husband is planning such a fun event~ cannot wait!

8. Heading to Cabo San Lucas in February to celebrate Rick's Mom's birthday. I am so excited to relax on the beach. It has been too long, old friend...

9. The planning and dreaming for our next Eurofest is starting to begin: Paris, Venice, Warsaw, Dublin, Edinburgh anyone?? Summer 2013 will be here before we know it. I have already lined up babysitters for those 2 weeks. God bless Grandmas.

10. Having a hardworking and brilliant husband that provides for us so we can have all these adventures and all we do every single day. I love him so much.

11. Planning on starting a family around the same time as our best friends. What is better than that? Not a thing I can think of. Think of all the family trips we can plan!

12. A private practice that all of a sudden started booming! I am so grateful.

13. Heading to Winterhaven tonight to see the most spectacular Christmas lights with our wonderful neighbors and friends! With a horse drawn carriage, no less. Hot chocolate, blankets, and a hot husband to cuddle up to? Yes, please.

14. Most of all, I am excited for what this next year holds. 2011 was without a doubt, amazing. 2012 is already filling up with crazy fun plans, but I am more excited for the unknown. Here we go.

Oh, Anthropologie.

You get me every time...

...magical.

Date #7~ 12 Dates of Christmas.

Yesterday was just one of those days when everything went right, just an overall great day. First, I had the whole day off. Yup- day one of my Xmas vacation has begun. I got to sleep in, made myself an awesome breakfast and had coffee and watched television. Awesome.
I went to Fleet Feet and had my stride analyzed, and the shoes I wanted were on sale for $40!!!! I also got some socks to help with my between the toes blister problem. It is pretty common, actually, and the socks look like vibram five fingers. I'll give 'em a whirl. My shoe size also went up another half size- goo. I am slowly flattening my feet with all this pounding of the pavement.

SCORE!!

Then, I went to AT&T because my phone charger has slowly frayed at the seams and is now no longer giving my phone a charge. Lame- but the guy at the store replaced it for FREE! Yayah! And after that, I went to the store and my super expensive shampoo was half off, and it was slightly raining when I left the grocery and a nice boy grabbed my cart and returned it for me! It was just one of those great days.

I decided to make all of Rick's favorite foods for him for dinner, I had the day off after all. I made homemade stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes (not the easiest), and cheddar and potato pierogies. He had been so sick the last few days with a sinus infection, and I thought some good home cooking would do the trick. We also had his favorite red wine, and I got him his ultimate fav, butter pecan ice cream for dessert. We had a lovely date #7, right in our very own kitchen. He was loving every minute of it- I also reminded him that every night would be like this- if I was a stay at home wife ;) A girl can dream...

Holidays and Date #6.

This weekend we headed up to Phoenix to attend the 6th annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party and to celebrate my Mommy's birthday with my family. On Friday we went up and hung out with Rick's parents and sister at his parents' house. His Mom made us a delicious dinner and Sam and Rick made their homemade ugly Christmas sweaters for the next night. There were glitter, hot glue guns, old family ornaments, and photos of friends strategically placed to make amazing sweaters.

Saturday morning Rick headed out to hit golf balls with his friend Travis and I went to run my longest run in a long time. 19 miles is as hard as you would expect it to be! It was fine, I did it... but running for 3 hours straight really takes a lot out of you. My friend Ann and I were talking later that night about how much time it really takes to train for a marathon. With full time jobs that have us leave for work and get home with little daylight to spare really puts a damper on training. Think how fast we would be if we could run whenever the weather was right and the mood struck! But- I now have two weeks off of work that allows me to run whenever I feel like it, any time of day, and for that, I am excited.

After I recovered from my run and Rick went to the grocery store, we made our treats for the sweater party and  headed out. Travis and Brielle hosted another wonderful and memorable Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. It was full of laughs, celebrations, hilarious sweaters, good food, delicious drinks, and best friends. We always look forward to this party, and wouldn't miss it.

The next morning we went to brunch with my parents, brother Mike and Carissa, and the babies to celebrate my Mommy's birthday. After that we headed home, and Rick and I had our 6th date of our 12 dates of Christmas, complete with pizza, hot chocolate, and a movie cuddled in bed. One of my favorite dates yet... and only four more days until we are back up for Christmas! I am so excited, it is the most wonderful time of the year!

Gift Exchange.

Every year we have a gift card exchange/happy hour with Rick's friends from Raytheon. Our friend Kyle hosts it and makes a trivia game from events of the past year and also supplies the prizes- a bunch of gift cards he has obtained from the year and also bought himself. It's always a fun time, and great to see everyone. Kyle's generous gifts don't hurt either ;)
Unfortunately, Rick has been feeling under the weather this past week, and was just not up for a night out. We hung at home, packed for our weekend in Phoenix, and had dinner. We were getting texts from some people at the party, telling us the funny things that were happening. It was sad to miss it.
After the happy hour was over, Kyle called and came by to deliver some goods. He brought us a huge plate of cookies his Mom had baked for us, and some homemade chocolate toffee, of which I ate probably 4 pieces in 5 minutes.

Kyle also brought Rick the new Call of Duty game, and we gave him a new Nike dri-fit long sleeve shirt he can wear running. He told me he had ordered my gift and it was on its way... only gave me some hints: it was a gift card, from a store not in Tucson, to buy gear for running my marathon, and he had never heard of it until Rick told him about it. Hmmmmmmmm............

Oh, and thank you Kyle, because the PlayStation is hooked up in my bedroom, I got to fall asleep to the sounds of war and frustration as my husband played his new video game late in to the night. Good thing I didn't have to work in the morning. Oh- wait....

12.15.2011

you don't love a person for their looks, or their clothes, or for their fancy car, but because they sing a song only you can hear.

i sort of really like you a lot, Rick P.

Santa Baby.

Here is my dream wish list for this Christmas season.... I know of a few things that my Mom may have hinted she is getting me, but a few others just need to be put out there into the universe.

Both of these watches are so gorgeous...must haves!
Makeup (my Mom always gets me this set at Xmas, lasts me the whole year), my very own treadmill, and Moroccan hair oil. It's supposed to be da bomb.
My sister in law has this bag in brown and the wallet. Cannot stop thinking about them.
Anything and everything Lululemon. That's what I told my brother I wanted this year: just Lululemon.
What list of coveted items would be complete without Anthropologie? Not one of mine.
Shoes, shoes, shoes. Tory Burch, Steve Madden, Ugg boots, oh my!

**Of course, the most important part of the holidays is spending it with family and friends, which I get to do aplenty this season. I cannot wait for my two week vacation to begin!

Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!

Mommy.

I want to take a moment to wish a very happy birthday to this woman. This wonderful lady is often my counselor, friend, sounding board, voice of reason, shoulder to cry on, psychologist, nurse, bank, cheerleader, role model, teacher, cook, chauffeur, travel agent, protector, and best of all, Mom.

I would not be who I am or where I am in life without you, Mommy. I love you, LOTS.

12.13.2011

Tough.

This lady is a tough cookie. She has been through a lot this last year, and still has her sense of humor, and loves her evening drink. I love her so much, and know she will make it over this latest hurdle.

We love you, Nanny. Get well soon.

Half vs Full.

As I confront the fact that my next race is a full marathon, I have been perusing the Internet looking for first hand accounts from people that have run both, and what they have to say about it. I obviously know that a half marathon is exactly that, half of a marathon, but I want to mentally prepare myself for what I am about to endure. I have a few longer runs under my belt, an 18 miler a few weeks ago, a 19 miler this upcoming weekend, which don't scare me and were and are going to be just fine. But, for some reason, 26.2 seems like a crazy number. Here are what a few peeps {including THE Hal Higdon} had to say about the subject:

"I ran last night. It didn’t kill me. In fact the only reason it wasn’t stellar was because I kind of felt like a Beluga hurtling down the road. Thank you food bloat. This is why I may never be a marathoner again (unless New York calls, naturally). It took me six weeks to feel normal after Chicago, post-half only took a few days. High five for the glory that is the half marathon." -Cely (running off the reeses.com)

"But then, of course, that little voice inside my head began to nag me. It said, “You do know that you never do anything half-way… And that you will complete the half, a respectable distance and certainly a big accomplishment for anyone, but you won’t feel that it’s YOUR best or satisfied with yourself…” And so….. I started to allow myself first to accept the full marathon challenge and then to say it OUT LOUD!" – Kate Gosselin

"I ran 10 marathons in 10 years, with times ranging from 3:57 for my first at Big Sur (not recommended as a first marathon) to a PR of 3:18 which qualified me for Boston Marathon in 2006. At this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to run any more full marathons, at least for a while.  I've done a few half marathons, which are more fun and less time consuming to train for. They are not as studly as the full marathon, and you can walk the next day. If you're looking for a good first marathon, look for something flat and cool, like Austin,  Chicago or Silicon Valley." –Valley of the Geeks.com

"There is a huge difference between a Marathon and a 1/2. The biggest is at the end of a half you can still walk away feeling good. I can promise after 42km, no such thing is going to happen. It HURTS, never the less I love the feeling of doing something only 1% of the running community does. Also the bragging rights of calling myself a marathoner is well worth the pain."
-yenkin2001

"On January 5, 2007, I found myself at mile 26 of the Disney Marathon wanting to die. That’s not hyperbole. Seriously, my one desire on that day, in that moment, was to allow myself to keel over into the Epcot grass and allow myself to succumb to the pain and misery that the marathon was inflicting upon me and die.
A year later, on January 27, 2008, I found myself at mile 13 of the Miami Half Marathon, and as I rounded the last corner before the race’s final stretch, I felt invigorated, strong, and bursting with pride.
I crossed the finish line of both of those races, but the differences in how I felt when I crossed the finish line of those two races, pretty much sums up my two very different feelings about the half and the full marathon. "
-jessruns.com

"THE HALF MARATHON IS A FRIENDLY DISTANCE. Beginners, who have gotten their introduction to road running in a 5-K or 10-K, can look to the half as the next step upward. Experienced runners like half marathons, because racing 13 miles requires somewhat less time commitment than does a full 26-mile marathon. They can recover more rapidly.
The excitement around half marathons often is the same as at a marathon--except you get to go home early. Also, you can use half marathon races as part of your training for later marathons. Knowing your time at the half marathon gives you a good idea of what to expect when you run the full marathon. This is why more than twice as many runners now run half marathons vs. full marathons." –Hal Higdon

"1. Half marathon is still challenging and you can concentrate on more speed work.
2. You don't lose entire weekends with really long runs as there is no need for a 18-22 mile run.
3. You finish the half marathon and feel fine (you can still go dancing that night).
4. If you are unhappy with your finish time, you can enter another half marathon race within weeks/months.
5. 10-15 mile long runs are all you need (less than 2 hrs. of running).
6. You don't hit "the wall."
7. I've never had post half marathon depression but I did feel a let down after completing the marathon probably due to all the training required for such an abrupt ending.
8. I've already completed the marathon including a 32 mile run.
*There may be a less risk of injury just based on less miles required during training but I'm not sure as other factors weight in to that conclusion including how you train, # of miles, pace, etc."
-hholines.blogspot.com

I thought that these accounts were going to scare me off, but as I read them more and more, I find myself being even more excited than ever. I know I will be able to do it, I know it will be fine. Painful, but fine. And I am proud of the fact that I will be able to say that I have run a marathon. Then, my friends, I will add my own account to this list. I may puke, I may cry, I may crawl across that finish line. But- I will finish. And for that, I am excited.

12 Dates of Christmas~ Dates 3, 4, and 5.

This weekend was another whirlwind- went way too fast! On Friday, after work, I ran up to the Hotel El Conquistador to the race expo for the half marathon this weekend. It was a small expo, I was in and out in only a few minutes. I got a tech shirt, a pair of socks, tons of GU and energy bars, and some throwaway gloves for the race Sunday. There were vendors, and reps from the Ragnar relay and Rock n' Roll marathon that I spoke with for a minute, but otherwise I was just interested in getting home to my cute hubby.

When I got home, Rick and I did a quick "shake out" run of 3 miles, and then got ready to meet our friends Josh and Katie out for a double date. Katie was chaperoning her high school's winter formal, so Josh, Rick and I hit up Pita Jungle for dinner and some beers, and then met Katie up at Laff's Comedy Cafe for a show. We had a great time, laughed, the boys drank.... fun evening.

The next morning, we were up early to go and cheer on our friend Kyle who was running a 5k at the U of A. He is new to the sport, and seems to enjoy it, and we wanted to support him. He did great, improved on his last time, and looked pretty steady running. Afterward, we hit up Beyond Bread for lunch, and a giant pretzel.

The rest of the day was spent Christmas shopping and attending the Fourth Avenue Street Fair. By the end of the day my legs and feet were exhausted! So much for resting these legs up the day before a half marathon! And I was angry because all of the fried food and junk food probably wasn't the best idea for a pre-race meal. I was salivating. Instead, we went out for our usual before-a-race meal, spaghetti and meatballs at Mama Louisa's. Yum! Date #4 was delicious and helped to calm my pre-race jitters. I went home, set out my gear, packed my bag, laid out my food for in the morning, and went to bed. I had to be up at 3:30 am to drive and catch a 5 am shuttle to the start.

 {carbo-loading at its finest}

The morning of the race was a cold one! It was 40* when I caught the shuttle with my friend Alex. The shuttle took a long time, so I really had to pee by the time we got to the start. I hopped off the bus before they were even letting anyone off and sprinted to the top of the mountain, only to be met by a long line at the port-a-pottys. Boo. I waited in line, then met up with Alex again to huddle by some heaters for a few minutes before warming up. By that time we were ready to get moving to stay warm! Alex headed to the front of everyone, and Randy and I started out together. Randy's goal was a 7:45 pace, so he left me after a mile or so, and I just ran at my easy 8:30 pace for next 9 or so miles. My main goal was not to go out too fast, which I have done in the past. I slowed at stations for water, took my GU, and chugged along. I was amazed at how easily I ran this race. I pushed it, but was never in a full on sprint, as I expected with this race having a lot of downhill stretches (I had steeper down hills in the last half I did, where I was sprinting at times). The hills were more gradual, with some rolling up and downs. I had a blister I that had been troubling me make its triumphant return at mile 9, so from then on I was in a lot of pain, but not enough to walk or stop. I just kept going along, loving my new playlist I had created the day before, and excited to finish and see everyone.

The last two miles were through a neighborhood, with some sucky hills that definitely slowed me down by that time. I rounded to the end, feeling good, and saw Rick, Randy, Kyle, and Alex's husband Jesse cheering me on. Rick told me later I looked like I was just taking an easy jog, and Randy had yelled "Sprint, Sara!". Ha~ I guess I was just happy I wasn't a red-faced hunch-backed mess as I have been in the past.

I was so proud of everyone that day! I beat my former PR by 16 minutes {1:53:15; 8:38 pace} (although I was shooting for 1:50, next time), Randy had a PR with a 1:40:05, and Alex WON! She was the first woman with a 1:16:51 (that is a 5:52 pace... I know, bananas). She told me before the race she was hoping for under a 1:18, but did not think she could do it, her fastest half split in a marathon had been a 1:22. She is so amazing, and as I have said before, she is so encouraging, so humble, and never ever brags about her accomplishments. I guess that's what the rest of us are here for.

{I'm the short, slow turtle in the middle!}

After the race we all went for a celebration breakfast, and I went home and vegged out. Rick and I went to In-N-Out burger for our post race celebration dinner, it was a perfect Date Night #5.

{Yes, those are animal style fries. Oh yes, they are...}

The 12 Dates of Christmas~ Dates 2 and 3.

My sweet husband and I continued our 12 dates of Christmas with another fun and relaxing weekend. On Friday night, we went on a double date night with our good friends and next door neighbors, Josh and Katie. We started with a delicious dinner at Zinburger- one of our favorites. I had the Samburger, which comes with bacon, thousand island (on the side},cheese, and I added a fried egg to it, with a side of their sweet potato fries. I also had a big dark beer, which is their closest version to Guinness.... yum! Zinburger never disappoints, and this meal was no exception.

We were all happily stuffed and went to go see the latest installment of Twilight at the theater. I LOVED it!! I thought the first half dragged on, and I thought Edward was kind of a wuss in this one, but the ending was rad, and I can't wait for the final film! {SPOILER} Bella is the most beautiful vampire, and I can't wait to see her kick ass. I don't think the boys were as impressed, but my sweet husband got through it without complaining. Our neighbor, Josh passed out in the first half hour, likely from his burgercoma and lack of wolf on vampire fighting action. Sorry bud, this episode was all about Bella and Edward "doing it".

The next morning I woke up and headed straight out for pedicures with Katie. We had breakfast at Bruegger's and these worn, sad feet with one missing and one black toenail needed some TLC. I felt so bad for the guy fixing my feet I gave him a fat tip, and they were {almost} good as new. Miracle workers, I tell you...you can't even tell which one is missing and which one is black!

Rick did a long run while I was at the salon, and after he got back we got dressed and headed up to the Biosphere in way north Tucson, the site of my half this coming weekend. I always like to check out the race course so that I am not surprised with some horrific hill that wasn't on the race elevation chart {believe, me it does happen- Rick thinks they lie with promises of a flat or downhill course to get more people to pay to register, I think he is on to something}.

LIES!! All LIES!!! There are uphills on this course!

After we checked out the course, we had a small amount of time to get to our massage appointment. We both haven't had massages in a long time and with all this running, I was long overdue. I get these knots behind and along my shoulder blades, and my masseuse did an awesome job working them out. I was totally sore the next day, but felt a ton better.

After our glorious massages, we did some shopping and headed home. Rested up a bit, and then headed out to dinner at our favorite little Japanese/Vietnamese restaurant. Rick always gets pho, and I got a bbq chicken dish with vermicelli and salad all in one giant bowl. So good and filling. We ended the night with a movie on the couch, under the blankets with hot chocolate and bailey's and the Christmas tree lit up in the background. Two wonderful dates, one wonderful weekend.

12 Dates of Christmas.

I got this idea from another blog- but I loved it so, and considering we went out last night for our 5 year dating anniversary, I copied it!

Rick and I spend a lot of alone time together, as we have no children, so documenting 12 memorable dates from December 1st through Christmas shouldn't be hard. I also refuse to cook on the weekends, so that forces Rick to take me out to dinner, and I think that easily counts as a date.

Last night, Rick and I wanted to do something for our 5 years together, but we could not decide where to go. We wanted something of significance, but nothing too far away or extravagant. We thought about our first few months together, where we went, and what we did. When we started dating, he lived in Tempe, so we could not go to our old stomping grounds. The first time we hung out after years and years we went to the movies {James Bond, Casino Royale- a movie was a mistake because we just talked through the whole thing, catching up} and then out for reverse happy hour at T.G.I.Fridays. Classy, I know... but we didn't want to night to end and that's where we ended up. So, last night, Rick and I returned to the original spot and had dinner.

We reminisced about where we were at that point in our lives, and kept saying, "Did you think that night that __________ would happen over the next 5 years??" The answer was always a resounding NO- but we had hoped it would. Some of them were:
Did you ever think we would still be together 5 years later?
Did you ever think that we would have traveled Europe together with our best friends?
Did you ever think we would move and have a beautiful house in Tucson?
Did you ever think we would get married in Vegas?
Did you ever think we would be planning on having a baby soon? and many more...

{back in the day: 2006/07}

It was a wonderful trip down memory lane- we shared the same appetizer we had that night, and Rick even wore his navy hooded sweatshirt that he was wearing when I realized I loved him all those years ago. That particular day he was wearing that hoodie, jeans, white sneakers, and a backwards hat with his long hair curling out from under it, and I just thought, "Whoa, I am so in love with this boy". He has changed a little bit- he no longer as the same long hair, has a little more laugh lines on his face. But he still has those dimples, that sweatshirt, those white skate sneakers, those kind eyes. And oh boy- he is still adorable as ever. Date 1, I believe, was a success.

Thanksgiving.

This past Thanksgiving weekend was just about as good as it gets! We got up to Phoenix Wednesday, hung out with my parents, made caramel corn and hit the hay early. Thursday morning we did our annual Turkey Trot. This year, Rick and I ran the Anthem Turkey Trot. We wanted to try something new, because last year we did the Peoria one, and it was terrible. It was a dirt run, down and back around a cone, and super early so it was freezing cold!

The Anthem Turkey Trot did not disappoint. It was a beautiful course, had heated indoor bathrooms, and even had prizes that were bottles of wine for the winners! Best kind of prize there is, I say... I even picked up one of those babies for 3rd place in my age division. {24:55, 8:01 pace}. I really owe it to my sweet husband. Usually he just blows me out of the water, but this year he wanted to run it together, and hung back with me. He pushed me to go faster, encouraging me all the way, and I got a personal record because of it! He could have gone way faster, but didn't care about a trophy or PR for himself, just a fun time. He is so awesome.

After the race, we went back to my parents house to change, and get ready for Thanksgiving dinner. We had 18 people at my parents' house this year, including Rick's parents, his sister, and her boyfriend. We had the best time, my Mom cooked an amazing meal, and most importantly, we all got to be together all day long. It is so much better than traveling back and forth between houses! I hope we can do it that way every year. I had the best time with my brother's girlfriend's little daughter and son. They are so much fun and so cute, I love them to death.

This was my favorite picture from the whole day~ my 89 year old grandmother on the floor drawing and coloring with a four year old... so sweet:

The next day it was time for the MOvember Gala. The party celebrating the boys growing moustaches all month long to raise money for a prostate cancer research charity. As much as I do not love the moustache look, I can appreciate the fun in the event, love another excuse to all get together, and it is ultimately for charity. We all gathered together at Ann and Marcel's beautiful house and had Mexican food, a moustache-shaped cake and jello shot, beer pong, left-right-center, and lots of laughs. I love Thanksgiving weekend!

I also got to visit with an old friend. She makes any party better... It was lovely to see you, dear Leah.

The next morning, we had breakfast with Ann, Marcel, and Brielle, and headed back to Tucson to rest, put up Christmas decorations, and long run on Sunday- which went pretty well! I think I may be able to do this marathon thingy after all!
